Contact the Office of Admission at admission@hanover.edu.Benjamin Templeton was the first African-American student to attend Hanover. A free black man from Chillicothe, Ohio, he began his education in 1832 and spent five years at the College, merely 10 years after the College's founding in 1827 and a full 25 years before President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Templeton went on to lead the free black community in Philadelphia where he served as pastor of the Second African Presbyterian Church. The Templeton Social Justice Leadership Program creates the opportunity for students to explore urgent questions of social, economic and environmental equity while gaining the practical skills necessary to be an effective leader for change in any community or profession. The Templeton Program is a cohesive, experiential four-year journey, combining rigorous academic studies, co-curricular activities and a paid internship - all focused on social justice.Membership in the program is offered to 20 prospective first-year students on the basis of academic excellence and commitment to leadership, multiculturalism and social justice. Designed to identify exceptional students who have a passion to promote diversity, human rights or social justice for race, gender, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or gender identities, this $2,500 scholarship hopes to give those students the means to make a significant contribution within the Hanover community.
